چکیده

Abstract In this work, the phase-field approach to fracture is extended model fatigue failure in high- and low-cycle regime. The energy degradation due repeated externally applied loads introduced as a function of local accumulation variable, which takes structural loading history into account. To end, novel definition variable proposed, allowing analysis at monotonic without interference extension, thus making framework generalised. Moreover, includes mean load influence implicitly. elastoplastic material with combined nonlinear isotropic kinematic hardening account for cyclic plasticity. ability proposed phenomenological naturally recover main features fatigue, including Paris law Wöhler curve under different ratios presented through numerical examples compared experimental data from author’s previous work. Physical interpretation additional parameter explored parametric study.

Mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in ductile and brittle solids

The mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation are examined with particular emphasis on the similarities and differences between cyclic crack growth in ductile materials, such as metals, and corresponding behavior in brittle materials, such as intermetallics and ceramics. This is achieved by considering the process of fatiguecrack growth as a mutual competition between intrinsic mechanisms of crac...

A molecular-dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids

Molecular-dynamics simulations of fracture in metallic glass-like systems are observed to undergo embrittlement due to a small change in interatomic potential. This change in fracture toughness, however, is not accompanied by a corresponding change in flow stress. Theories of brittle fracture proposed by Freund and Hutchinson indicate that strain rate sensitivity is the controling physical para...

Fatigue-Crack Propagation Behavior of Ductile/Brittle Laminated Composites

A study has been made of the fatigue-crack propagation properties of a series of laminated Nbreinforced Nb3Al intermetallic-matrix composites with varying microstructural scale but nominally identical reinforcement volume fraction (20 pct Nb). It was found that resistance to fatigue-crack growth improved with increasing metallic layer thickness (in the range 50 to 250 mm) both in the crack-divi...

A Model for Deformation and Fragmentation in Crushable Brittle Solids

A unified framework of continuum elasticity, inelasticity, damage mechanics, and fragmentation in crushable solid materials is presented. A free energy function accounts for thermodynamics of elastic deformation and damage, and thermodynamically admissible kinetic relations are given for inelastic rates (i.e., irreversible strain and damage evolution). The model is further specialized to study ...

Ju l 1 99 8 A molecular - dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids

A molecular-dynamics study of ductile and brittle fracture in model noncrystalline solids Abstract Molecular-dynamics simulations of fracture in model amorphous solids are shown to exhibit brittle or ductile behavior depending on small changes in interatomic potential. Yet, simulations of these two model solids under pure shear reveal no significant difference in their ultimate yield stress. To...
